Over the next three years TARA will develop an interactive theatre performance with young people inspired by the rich heritage of migrant sailors working on the River Thames and in the navy.
Young people from across London will research the history of the lascars, the forgotten Asian, African and 'foreign' seamen who served on British ships. From Bengal to China, West Africa and eventually to London the sailors came, shipped out by the Calcutta based East India Company.
SAILING INTO BRITAIN will document and celebrate the rich history of the forgotten migrant sailors who made a huge contribution to London life in the navy and the throbbing heartbeat of the capital, the River Thames. This arts and heritage project will mark London's rich sea faring history - a history often untold but now celebrated in preparation for London 2012 and the Cultural Olympiad. In 2012 SAILING TO BRITAIN will be performed on a barge sailing along the Thames from Wandsworth to Greenwich. This project is supported by London Councils.
